New Book by Tim Bartley and colleagues

Tim Bartley

Tim Bartley, Associate Professor of Sociology, is the author of a new book, Looking Behind the Label: Global Industries and the Conscientious Consumer  , co-authored with Sebastian Koos, Hiram Samel, Gustavo Setrini, and Nik Summers.  Consumers are increasingly looking for fair trade, eco-labeled, or sweat-free products, and companies are going to new lengths to reassure consumers and investors that conditions in their global supply chains are decent.  But can “conscientious consumerism” really make a difference?  Do labels and voluntary standards really translate into better working conditions, more environmentally sustainable production processes, and fairer global industries?  In this book, Bartley and colleagues tackle these questions by critically examining the idea of “conscientious consumerism” and by looking closely at four types of products—wood/paper, food, apparel/footwear, and electronics--in a variety of locations around the world.
