Ohio State is in the process of revising websites and program materials to accurately reflect compliance with the law. While this work occurs, language referencing protected class status or other activities prohibited by Ohio Senate Bill 1 may still appear in some places. However, all programs and activities are being administered in compliance with federal and state law.

Sociology Climate Committee

Purpose of the Committee:

The role of the Climate Committee is to provide a supportive, non-coercive, and voluntary way to help members of our community learn from one another by facilitating important conversations around marginalization and exclusion that are crucial to doing anti-racism and other inclusive work in our department.

Our goal is to help people in the department resolve issues informally and improve relationships through guided discussion. The committee will work informally with the Office of Institutional Equity who will provide support and advice to the committee, and who can also provide support to the participants in the process. The role of the committee is to work informally to resolve issues within the department and not to investigate or sanction anyone.

Committee Composition:

The committee consists of two faculty members appointed by the chair, two chosen by committee in consultation with the chair from 4 nominations made by the Sociology Graduate Student Association (SGSA), two SGSA members, one lecturer, and one staff member.

Campus Resources:

The Office of Institutional Equity

The Office of Institutional Equity exists to help the Ohio State community prevent and respond to all forms of harassment, discrimination and sexual misconduct. This centralized office houses the university’s Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Affirmative Action and Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO), Protection of Minors, and Title IX functions.

The Office of Institutional Equity coordinates Ohio State’s response to all complaints of harassment, discrimination and sexual misconduct affecting students, employees, graduate associates, appointees, volunteers, visitors, suppliers and contractors, including providing information on rights and options for formal investigation.

The office also provides coordinated support to anyone impacted to help them access on- and off-campus support resources, including confidential resources. Dedicated coordinators help arrange interim measures to ensure continued access to educational and employment opportunities, such as no contact directives, changes in class or work schedule, emergency housing, counseling, and academic support.

Title IX

The Title IX office exists to provide support, resources, and to investigate instances of sexual assault, sexual harassment, domestic/dating violence, stalking, sex-based discrimination, and pregnancy discrimination. They can provide confidential support, connect students, faculty, and staff with resources on campus, as well as provide options moving forward.

Ethicspoint

While the above offices provide options for reporting as well as resources for support, there is another option for anonymous reporting. The Ethicspoint reporting line is a way to anonymously and confidentially report activities that may involve unethical or otherwise inappropriate activity or behavior in violation of OSU’s established policies.
