Title: American Bonds: How Credit Markets Shaped a Nation
Abstract: The issue of moving credit around the United States, both across territory and across social groups, has been an important part of U.S. politics since the founding of the nation. In the early 20th century, a group of reformers reframed credit provision as a way for the government to help people help themselves. The talk will explain how this idea justified a transformation in economic and social policy that profoundly shapes the American experience to this day.
