Sociology Track
Sociology is the study of human behavior in its context, asking questions like, "How does your social network shape your behavior? Why has inequality increased so much in the United States? What role do schools play in perpetuating or preventing inequality in society?"
These are a few examples from our own faculty’s research, but sociology touches on other topics, including the study of race relations, politics, culture, economic inequality, religion, crime, and more.
Criminology Track
Criminology is the study of the causes and consequence of criminal behavior and uses data on individuals, cities, and countries to understand patterns of crime and punishment.
For instance, why do some people stop committing crimes while others become entrenched? Why do some neighborhoods have more killing than others? And why do some people go to prison for their crimes while others get probation?

How to Declare Your Major
To declare a Sociology or Criminology & Criminal Justice Studies Major, all you need to do is meet with an advisor.
Please call either 614-292-1175 or 614-292-6961 to schedule an hour-long individual advising appointment.
During your appointment, the advisor will:
- Reveiw the major requirements
- Discuss our experiential learning options
- Talk about the SOC department and opportunities within it
- Share valuable resources
- Talk about possible career paths
- Officially declare your major
- Review your degree audit (only by individual appointment)
