Vincent Roscigno, Professor of Sociology was attending a ruse meeting with other faculty members on the afternoon of January 26, 2012, when into the conference room walked President E. Gordon Gee!  Behind him entered SBS Dean Gifford Weary, Jan Weisenberger, Assoc. VP for Research, Vinnie’s wife Susan, son Sam, daughter Allegra, and many Sociology graduate students and staff members.  Vinnie’s face showed confusion then surprise!  Dr. Gee explained that Vinnie was one of only six awardees to receive the 2012 University Distinguished Scholar Award.  We followed the surprise presentation with a reception for Vinnie and guests.

The recipients of this prestigious award are recognized for exceptional scholarly accomplishments and have compiled a substantial body of research.  Awardees were nominated by their departments and chosen by a committee of senior faculty, including several past recipients of the award.  The award is supported by the Office of Research.  Distinguished Scholars receive an honorarium and a research grant to be used over the next three years.

A University Awards Ceremony recognizing all of the recipients of faculty awards will occur in spring quarter.  Our congratulations to all of the recipients including our own Professor Vinnie Roscigno!
