Q: What resources does the department offer?
A 'multimedia kit' comprising the following:
A laptop with:
- Windows XP
- Office 2007 (includes PowerPoint, Word, Excel and Access)
- Internet Explorer
- SPSS
- CD, DVD and floppy drives, as well as USB ports for flash drives
- Windows Media Player, with codecs for playing a wide variety of formats (read on!)
- Note: Depending on license constraints and advance notice, the SRL may be able to install additional software if it is needed for your presentation.
An LCD projector capable of displaying from:
-
(only one of these at a time)
- A laptop
- A desktop PC
- A VCR or DVD player with composite or S-Video output
- The projector also has sound input that can be used with a computer or other sound source that has a line-out or headphone-out. The SRL can also loan speaker sets to deliver sound to larger rooms.
A projection screen in Townshend 241. This screen cannot be taken to other locations. Most classrooms are equipped with a pull-down projection screen, or one can be requested from OSU Classroom Services.
Overhead projectors (for transparencies) are available in Townshend 241, Townshend 245 and Derby 070 (SIL). Most classrooms also have at least one overhead projector.
The SIL has a desktop PC running Windows XP with a full complement of presentation and analysis software. The SIL also has two LCD projectors for dual-display.
Q: How do I request Department resources or assistance for my presentation?
If you are certain of your needs, please send an email to the SRL, specifying the following:
- The time and date of your presentation
- The location of your presentation
- How long you will need hardware
- Whether you need assistance during your presentation from the SRL
Reservations of presentation hardware and services are first-come, first-served. For best service, please make your reservation at least one week in advance. There is no limit on how far in advance you may make your reservation.
Unless you are unable to do so, you are responsible for picking up department-loaned equipment from the SRL, setting it up in your classroom, and returning it to the SRL. If, for some reason you will need assistance during your presentation, please request it in advance.
Q: What resources does the University offer?
OSU's Classroom Services (http://classroom.osu.edu) offers a substantial variety of hardware, software and services. Please refer to their web site or call 2-3131 to inquire about services.
Q: Is there a charge for these services?
Department Services are free.
University-provided services are free for classroom use only. Please contact Classroom Services for current fees for non-classroom use. At of 4/8/03, payment can be made for non-classroom use with cash, check or 100W.
Q: How do I request materials from OSU Classroom Services?
Call 2-3131 or email classroom@osu.edu. You may have to go to the basement of the Central Classroom Building and fill out a form the first time you make a request.
When making your request, you must supply:
- the full name of the instructor of the course (if applicable)
- the course number
- the room where the presentation materials are needed
- whether you will pick up / return the materials (or if you need to have them delivered and picked up by Classroom Services).
Q: I am not giving the presentation, but am coordinating a visiting speaker, planning student presentations in my class, etc. What should I do?
Email the SRL with contact information for the speaker so that he may discuss technology needs with her/him. Please provide this contact information at least one week in advance.
- Speakers may use their own hardware if necessary, but it must be made available to the Lab at least one hour before the presentation so that it can be tested with our projector.
- Students in your class may not use their own laptop with our projector. There is simply too much variation among laptops and we cannot support hardware that we do not maintain.
