Office 2007
Overview
SRL staff are deploying Microsoft Office 2007 to department PCs. This document has three sections: Schedule, Obtaining Office 2007, and Learning Resources.
Schedule
This deployment has the following phases:
- 1. CURRENT PHASE Install Office 2007 side-by-side with our current version, Office XP, and keep Office XP the default application for 'old' office documents. That means that Word/Excel/Powerpoint XP will be the default application for documents created in older versions of Office, and Office 2007 will be the default only for documents created with an Office 2007 application.
- 2. Change our configuration so that Office 2007 becomes the default application for all documents, but Office XP is still available via start menu shortcuts.
- 3. Uninstall Office XP, so that the Office 2007 suite is the single application for opening Office documents.
Shortcuts to Office 2007 applications will appear in the start menu alongside shortcuts to Office XP applications, like so (click image for larger version):
Getting Office 2007
On your on-campus PC
If Office 2007 has not already installed on your on-campus PC, reboot it. The reboot will take longer than usual, as Office 2007 is a large application. Log on after the reboot and check the Start Menu for Office 2007. If, for any reason, Office 2007 does not install, please contact the Lab.
On a department-owned, off-campus computer
Contact the SRL to schedule an appointment, and bring your department-owned PC or laptop to receive an installation of Office 2007. We can discuss whether to uninstall old versions at that time, and what application will be the default for opening Office documents.
On a personally-owned computer

Learning to use Office 2007
On your PC
- The Help menu is gone from Office applications, and is replaced by this icon:
. You can find this icon on the right-hand side of the program window in Office applications.
- VERY USEFUL: Microsoft released a set of 'translators' that show you the Office 2007 equivalent of functions older versions of Office, by clicking through simulated menus. We have placed these in the Start Menu: Start -> Programs -> Microsoft Office -> Resources, and you can download them for use on your off-campus computer at http://office.microsoft.com/en-gb/word/HA100744321033.aspx.
